What are you working on right now?

Retreat Center | Lineweight Studio

Lineweight Studio is a mission-driven architecture practice focused on bringing together adaptive reuse, walkable urbanism, and sustainable design to deliver transformative projects with high community impact. Right now, we’re working on a retreat center in rural GA, several residential renovations around intown Atlanta, and some accessory dwelling units (ADUs).

Who is your ideal client?

Our ideal client is a developer, business owner, or homeowner who wants an architecture firm to renovate a property to better suit their needs. We are especially passionate about breathing new life into old and underutilized buildings, so we like to work with people who can see the potential in those types of properties.

What is a common misconception about your industry?

Historically speaking, I think architects have done a pretty poor job of informing the public about what we actually do! Designing, permitting, and constructing a building is an intimidating process. A good architect will act as your guide from start to finish, helping you stay organized, informed, on schedule, and on budget. Design will always be at the core of our work, but our services go well beyond just creating drawings.

What is a big picture for your business?

I want to see vibrant public spaces surrounded by thoughtfully designed buildings in every city and town in the country. Walkable places support positive mental and physical health outcomes, increased retail sales, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. Revitalizing existing downtowns is a great place to start. Lineweight Studio is uniquely positioned to envision those future states and help to make it a reality.

What is your superpower?

Problem solving! Sometimes that means figuring out the best bathroom layout for a guest house, and sometimes that means masterplanning and designing a 200-acre retreat center. Whatever the scale, I enjoy breaking problems down into manageable pieces, communicating solutions to my clients, and then overseeing implementation.

What is your favorite productivity tool?

BQE Core. I use Core to track how I spend my time, invoice clients, manage project budgets, and analyze profitability.

What book should everyone read?

I can think of two books that everyone should read. Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide by John Cleese (of Monty Python fame) is a fun read about how to stay creative, keep motivated, and push through difficult stretches. Walkable City by Jeff Speck opened my eyes to how the design of our urban spaces shapes the ways that we live.

Why Alkaloid?

I’ve been a member at another local coworking space and I looked at all the big-name coworking spaces when I was searching for an office. Alkaloid’s atmosphere stood out to me. Everyone, starting with Katharine, is friendly and welcoming, and the space has a unique character that feels more authentic to me than the other options.

What is your favorite perk at Alkaloid?

Proximity to the Beltline! I love being able to walk to coffee or lunch on the city’s biggest and best pedestrian and cycling path. Plus, having an office in a converted warehouse is a good fit for an architecture firm focused on adaptive reuse and renovations. Adaptive reuse, walkable urbanism, and sustainable design – Alkaloid is at the nexus of Lineweight’s three core areas of focus!

What advice would you give someone considering coworking?

Give it a try! It doesn’t require a big commitment to try it out.
