My Journey in Atlanta’s Coworking Community

As I reflect on the past ten years, I am filled with pride at how far Alkaloid Networks has come. In what started as a small idea, this coworking space has become a cornerstone for micro-businesses and remote workers alike, thriving in a community-oriented environment. With amenities such as unlimited access to conference rooms and ample free parking, it’s clear why Alkaloid has enjoyed such success.

Located on the bustling Atlanta Beltline, Alkaloid Networks offers so much more than just a place to work. It brings us together, forming connections that inspire ideas and innovation through an amazingly diverse community. I know members appreciate the flexibility of workspaces here, from shared and dedicated desks to private offices, making it a versatile home for both solo entrepreneurs and growing teams.

The welcoming atmosphere cultivated at Alkaloid Networks encourages partnerships and collaborations that has fueled the growth. This space continues to support the entire community, embodying the dynamic and creative spirit of Atlanta.

The Evolution of Alkaloid Networks

The Early Days and Development

My journey began in January 2015, while seeking space for another small business. I came across a historic warehouse in O4W and saw a unique opportunity to create a coworking space accessible by foot and bike. Nestled along the Eastside Beltline Trail, this location would link future Alkaloid with the charm of urban living. And, to be perfectly honest, I wanted to work somewhere close to home but not at home—someplace that I could walk to and enjoy a little break in my day. Initially, my focus was on creating flexible workspaces, like dedicated desks and private offices. The blend of convenience and accessibility helped lay a strong foundation for the community.

If you want to learn more about the origins of the Alkaloid Networks name, here’s the spot.

Building Our Coworking Community

From the start, I prioritized building a friendly coworking community. Having previously spent 30 years in corporate offices myself, I always felt that office comforts should be included in any membership, so I never considered charging for every little thing. I chose to offer unlimited amenities like conference room usage along with a stocked kitchen, which encouraged all of us to connect. The community aspect became a crucial draw, providing networking opportunities that fostered emerging businesses. This welcoming environment became a key ingredient in the recipe for success, attracting individuals and small teams seeking more than just a desk.

Expansion and Adaptation

COVID Safe Outdoor Workspace | Alkaloid Networks

Over time, Alkaloid Networks adapted to meet members evolving needs. I expanded the offerings to include features like outdoor patio seating and podcast equipment—all included in membership. As the community saw membership growth, it reflected the mainstream shift towards flexible work environments. Our location on the Atlanta Beltline allowed us to capitalize on the city’s thriving linear park, continuing to accommodate those of us embracing city life.

After successfully growing Alkaloid Networks to over 15,000 sq ft, I seriously thought about opening a second location on the Westside Beltline (before it really exploded). It sounded like an exciting opportunity, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want to expand and reach more amazing people? But as I weighed my options, I realized how much I value the close connection I have with my members at my current space.

Being hands-on and accessible is super important to me, and I love being involved in the day-to-day interactions and community-building that happens here. I want to ensure that every member feels supported and connected, and I felt that opening a second location might stretch me too thin. So, I decided to focus on creating an even better experience for everyone in the existing communiuty. It’s all about quality over quantity, and I’m excited to see how we can continue to grow together right here!

Creating the Atlanta Coworking Alliance

In my efforts to support not just our community but the broader coworking landscape, I founded the Atlanta Coworking Alliance in 2020. While being a part of Cat Johnson’s Lab, the idea was to create a network that would help potential members find their perfect local community, and it was also a way for me to recommend other spaces when I couldn’t provide the service someone needed. I truly believed that by working together, we could elevate the coworking experience for everyone in Atlanta.

However, as we all know, COVID had other plans. The pandemic hit hard, and many of the original spaces in the Alliance struggled to survive. It was heartbreaking to witness the challenges faced by my fellow coworking owners and operators, but I remain hopeful that the spirit of collaboration we fostered will continue to inspire resilience and innovation in our community.

Including All The Things For Membership

Creating Alkaloid Networks has provided me with a flexible and supportive environment for some of my other pursuits. Just like my members, I can enjoy a comfortable work-life balance and seize opportunities for growth.

A Variety of Workspaces and Amenities

Alkaloid Networks offers a wide range of amenities that cater to different working styles. I have made sure that members have access to unlimited conference rooms and reliable, lightning-fast internet for seamless work. The well-stocked kitchen, filled with locally roasted coffee and cold brew, along with fresh fruit from a local food co-op, is perfect for quick, healthy breaks. A few of our business neighbors, Just Add Honey, Julianna’s Crepes and Polar Lounge give Alkaloid members a 10% discount. Supporting other local small business is baked into my ideology.

There’s plenty of free parking for both cars and bicycles, and for those cycling in or needing a refresh, I have showers available. The workspace is designed to enhance productivity and comfort.

Catering to Diverse Professional Needs

Alkaloid Networks provides solutions for varying professional needs. Many solopreneurs, start with a shared or dedicated desk and have the option to expand to a private office as their business grows. The flexible environment includes private offices and meeting rooms, accommodating any business size.

Watching members like Stephen create their own community within the Alkaloid community to have it grow into it’s own thriving community next door makes my heart happy (which means we can still visit each other too).

Over the years, I’ve witnessed several “recycles”—members who start a business here, grow into larger spaces, eventually outgrow the community here to get their own offices, sell their businesses, and frequently return to Alkaloid to start again (one even wrote a guest blog here). It brings me joy to see the success of these members and know that, in some small way, I contributed to that success.

The Alkaloid environment supports urban commuting, with locations like Inman Park, Poncey Highland, and Cabbagetown being easily accessible. Members can choose a setup that suits them best, whether they’re part of larger teams or individual entrepreneurs striving to build their businesses.

Networking and Community Events

Our community at Alkaloid Networks is known for being friendly and welcoming. Regular community events offer networking opportunities for all of us. These events encourage connections and collaborations, helping us build strong networks.

One of the things that warms my heart is to see members making organic connections in the breakroom or in our community Slack group and discovering that they can help each other.

Regular social gatherings create a sense of belonging. This vibrant community supports us in our professional journeys, fostering a spirit of collaboration and shared success.

The Connector

Looking back, I see how Alkaloid Networks has become a staple in Atlanta’s coworking scene, growing alongside the vibrant life of the Beltline. What started almost by accident as a small venture has blossomed into a thriving community. I’m proud to say that Alkaloid holds the distinction of being the longest-running independently owned and operated coworking community in the city of Atlanta.

Through my daily interactions with members, I’ve earned the nickname “the Connector.” I make it a point to engage with everyone, learning about their needs and aspirations. By understanding their goals, I can connect them with other members who share similar interests or can offer support. This role not only strengthens the community but also fosters collaboration and innovation, ensuring that everyone feels supported in their endeavors.

I couldn’t ask for a better nickname to encapsulate the joy I’ve experienced over the past decade in the coworking world. It perfectly reflects my passion for building connections and nurturing a vibrant community, and I look forward to many more years of growth, collaboration, and shared success at Alkaloid Networks.
