The Docupedia: Now an Alkaloid Project
Ben Klang, Saturday 27 January 2007 - 12:37:00 // comment: 0

Alkaloid Networks is proud to announce the merger of Lucid Interactive's Docupedia. Originally started by Alkaloid Fellows Jeff Smith and Bryan Rite, the Docupedia has sustained regular and growing traffic since its founding. Key articles such as the WEP cracking tutorial have been mentioned on Digg.com as well as other internet news sites. Now the Docupedia has come home to roost and can be found at its new URL docs.alkaloid.net. Welcome Docupedia!

This was an excellent opportunity to resurrect the once-lost Solaris LDAP client with OpenLDAP server How-To. Unfortunately, due to an oversight during the last site conversion, the document was delinked from the Projects page. It has now found its new home on the Alkaloid Docupedia and hopefully will continue to expand to cover Kerberos integration.

As our final piece of housekeeping news, the PodMail demo has been restored to full functionality. While the RSS feeds continued to operate, we had disabled the phone-in side due to technical changes. If you haven't yet checked out the demo, we encourage you to do so now. See the PodMail site for more information.

Footstops.com Public Release
Bryan Rite, Wednesday 03 January 2007 - 14:02:25 // comment: 0

If you read Alkaloid at all, you'll know one of the projects we've been working on is a free travel blog website named Footstops.com. While similar to other site out there, Footstops promotes responsible travel and donates all its ad revenue, donations, and merchandise profits to various humanitarian and ecological charities around the world.

We are pleased to announce that Footstops.com has finished its beta testing phase and is now open to public registration. Whether you're going on a backpacking adventure or just a weekend trip, check out Footstops: its a great way to showcase your trip and photos to your friends and family.

4th Alkaloid Conference in Atlanta
Bryan Rite, Monday 20 November 2006 - 19:00:00 // comment: 1

Well its time again for the much anticipated Alkaloid Conference, this year being held in Atlanta Georgia from Saturday, Nov. 24th - Saturday, Dec. 2nd.

With so much action going on around the Alkaloid Networks these days there will be lots on the agenda. Putting aside some LAN parties and copious amounts of drinking, some topics we hope to cover include the Alkaloid infrastructure, the resurgence of the A-ScAN, current and future projects including Horde Development, honey pots, Footstops.com, Metal.com, and much more.

If you're in the area and interested in meeting up with the Alkaloid developers and members, talking about projects and ideas or just having a good time with some geeks, come join us! Send an email to atl2006@alkaloid.net for times and locations..

ldap2dns version 0.4.1
Ben Klang, Thursday 19 October 2006 - 15:07:39 // comment: 0

Thanks to many helpful emails and forum posts, a new and improved version of ldap2dns is now available.

This is primarily a bugfix release and includes the following changes:
* Updated scripts/data2ldif.pl to properly handle reverse domains
* Fixed parser bugs in scripts/data2ldif.pl (Thanks Fleischmann Bonaventura and Adrian Goins)
* Added missing option -M (Thanks Jason Chambers)
* Change default record limit to LDAP_NO_LIMIT
* Tightened up LDAP search scope when calculating the checksum (Thanks Jason Chambers for the bug report)
* Fixed bug reading the LDAP bind password out of the environment (Thanks Nick Gregory for the bug report)

With this release, some performance testing was done. I am pleased to report that, with a properly tuned LDAP database, ldap2dns is capable of handling 64,000 records comprising 8000 domains and produce a properly formatted TinyDNS data file in under 30 seconds. This was tested on a Pentium 4 3GHz desktop machine running OpenSuSE 10.1 with OpenLDAP 2.2 on localhost and ldap2dns version 0.4.1.

If anyone out there has a large install, feel free to post a comment to this announcement or in the Support Forums with your own observations. Your feedback will help improve this project.

As always, there are RPMs and Tarballs available on the Downloads page.
